The WiM-Africa Coalition Board is an inclusive stakeholder engagement platform that brings together Women in Mining (WiM) organizations, NGOs, advocacy groups, policymakers, and key mining sector stakeholders across Africa.

At WiM-Africa, we believe in the power of collaboration over competition. We recognize that no single organization can address the diverse challenges that women in mining face across the continent. That is why we created the WiM-Africa Coalition Board – a unified space where diverse voices, perspectives, and expertise come together to drive positive change in Africa’s mining sector.

This Coalition Board is NOT a decision-making body, but rather a stakeholder assembly designed to foster collaboration, facilitate networking, share resources, and amplify advocacy efforts for women in mining across Africa.

Why Was the WiM-Africa Coalition Board Established?

The WiM-Africa Coalition Board was created to bridge the below gaps by bringing together organizations that are working to support women in mining at local, national, and regional levels.

 

The mining industry in Africa presents immense opportunities, yet women continue to face barriers such as:

Limited access to funding for mining projects and entrepreneurship.

Gender disparities in leadership and decision-making roles.

Unsafe working conditions in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).

Inadequate representation in mining governance and policy formulation.

Limited access to training, mentorship, and career development opportunities.

What is the Purpose of the WiM-Africa Coalition Board?

How the Coalition Board is Structured

The WiM-Africa Coalition Board operates through:

1️⃣ Regional Clusters:

To ensure diverse representation across Africa, the Coalition Board is organized into five regional clusters:
🌍 West Africa
🌍 East Africa
🌍 Southern Africa
🌍 Central Africa
🌍 North Africa

These clusters allow members to engage in discussions specific to their mining realities and collaborate on regional-level initiatives.

Members can also join working groups that focus on key areas such as:

📌 Policy & Advocacy – Engaging governments & institutions to push for inclusive policies.
📌 Mining Safety & Responsible Practices – Promoting best practices in artisanal and large-scale mining.
📌 Capacity Building & Funding Access – Empowering women through financial education & funding linkages.
📌 Youth & NextGen Initiatives – Encouraging young women to pursue careers & leadership in mining.
📌 Host Community Engagement & ESG Compliance – Ensuring sustainable mining development for local communities.
📌 Research & Knowledge Sharing – Gathering data & insights to inform policy & program development.

With the approval of the WiM-Africa Board, led by Dr. Comfort Asokoro-Ogaji, the Coalition Board is designed to offer a seat to every WiM organization in Africa—whether formally structured or not.
